Social media is a category of sites that is based on user participation and user-generated content.
That’s just one of the definitions that I was able to find. There are countless different ways to describe social media but they all have to do with a social aspect of sharing information. The information can come in the form of video, audio, text or multimedia.
I must admit that I have had my doubts on social media at some point. I was concerned that it was just a phase that many people were going through and once people decided that the cons exceeded the pros people would to decide to leave and find another fad. With all the recent concerns with privacy and personal information, I was wondering if it was a good idea to continue jumping on all the social media bandwagons or if I should be more reluctant.
I personally use YouTube, Flickr, Wikipedia, Digg, StumbleUpon, Tumblr, Blogger, and WordPress on a regular basis. It feels like there is always a non-stop flow of information and there are always more ways to access even more information. It seems like a shame to block out these portals of free information and I think as long as you are always aware of what you’re doing you will be safe.
